How to Repurpose Your Blog Posts to Create Additional Content

by | Dec 6, 2021 | Content Marketing

If you’re like most entrepreneurs, you start off with a vision of what you want your blog to become. But once the post is finished, you find yourself wondering: what else can I do with this?

With the rise of the content marketing revolution, entrepreneurs like you are using blog posts as a way to generate ideas for your digital marketing efforts.

You know that blogging is an essential tool in your marketing toolkit. But while some of us love blogging (hello), others can’t even imagine ever finding time to create new content.

What if you could turn a blog post into different kinds of content for other platforms, such as Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter that actually works?

If you’ve been blogging for a while and have a bunch of content sitting around. It can be difficult to figure out what to do with this content. The answer is to repurpose the blog posts and in some cases, combine them to create additional content.

Note:  this will work even if you’ve only written one blog post.

Here are some ideas on how to get started.

Turn a Blog Post into a Video

If your blog post is a little too long for its audience to read, consider turning it into a video. This is a very efficient way to get your point across and create a short but powerful message. All you need is a camera and a voiceover. You can either do a live stream or record a video of yourself talking about the subject in a few minutes.

If you’re nervous about being on camera, you can use a software service such as Wave.video. You can copy your blog post into the app and AI will create a video using parts of your copy and create a video.

Optimize Blog Posts with a Content Upgrade

What if you could write a blog post that is also a lead magnet for your readers to take action? Every article you write is a potential lead magnet for people to take action. After all, the more you write, the more leads you generate, and that’s why you’re writing them. Blog posts educate and build authority.

Here is a content upgrade idea! You’ve written a blog post, but there are so many other things you can add to it. Instead of just writing a massively long blog post or writing another post…

  • create the additional content, providing the reader exceptional value in your favourite word processing app
  • save the document as a PDF
  • create an opt-in form and embed it at the bottom of the blog post
  • readers who really want to get more, can opt-in and download the pdf
  • they get added to your email list – and they are a warm lead since ‘they” took action to get the content upgrade.

Turn a Blog Post into an Infographics

Infographics are generally used to attract people to your website and they are a great way to engage with your audience. You can find some very creative infographics on Instagram, Pinterest and many websites and you can also make one for yourself using Canva. This is especially true if you are looking to attract more followers to your blog. The only problem that I see with infographics is that they can take a lot of time to create so take advantage of the free templates in Canva.

Infographics are typically created to give a visual representation of text. They can be used as a standalone piece of content or as a supplement to a blog post.

For Instagram, Pinterest or Facebook, extract the main headline and sub-headlines from a blog post and put those into the infographic.  Add a few sentences to describe the infographic in the captions or post description.

Turn Blog Posts into Podcasts

To get a sense of what a podcast is, think of it like a radio show that’s delivered via the internet. People can listen to podcasts in the car, at home, or while running, and there are even some that are specifically designed to be listened to while exercising.

The main difference between an audio podcast and a written podcast is that the written podcast contains both audio and written material.  Some benefits are:

  • written portion
    • can be indexed by Google
    • a person can read it anywhere
    • some people learn better by reading
    • a person that cannot hear can consume the content
  • audio portion
    • a person who is blind can listen to the audio
    • some people learn better by listening (myself, I learn by written and audio at the same time)
    • you can add your personality to the recording (such as a laugh or giggle) which is very difficult to do with written only content

You don’t have to have a lot of money or equipment to create a podcast. You can record your voice or use your phone’s microphone to do it. In fact, most podcasting software is free.

Turn Blog Posts into Webinars

You can convert the content of a blog post into a webinar presentation in less than an hour.

This can be done in Canva (free version) by creating presentation slides.  You can copy and paste portions of the blog post in the slides and expand on these portions by speaking to the people in the webinar.

To keep things simple, you can create the presentation in Canva and do a screen share through Zoom so your participants can see the content, listen to you speak and ask questions at the end.

Once you’ve done a few and you really like it, there are fantastic platforms that specialize in webinars such as Webinar Ninja.  But, keep things simple when getting started.

Take excerpts from the blog posts to use as social media captions

Doing this is much like doing a quick summary of what the post is about.

You can take any bullet points in your blog post and create an Instagram carousel or Pinterest Idea pin.  If you think about it, look at this entire blog post…can you see how each section can be turned into a post containing specific content for social media.

Repurposing Video

If you’re recorded a video instead of writing a blog post, you can repurpose that as well:

  • Share your full video on IGTV (Instagram Video) and YouTube
  • Get your video transcribed and turn it a written blog post or linked in article
  • Extract your audio from the video and turn it into a podcast episode
  • Turn your video into micro videos and share them on your favourite platforms:
    • Instagram carousels, stories and reels
    • YouTube Shorts
    • Pinterest Idea Pins
    • TikTok

When repurposing video, be mindful of the orientation of the video.

  • YouTube videos are horizontal at 1920×1080.
  • Pinterest idea pins, TikTok and Instagram stories and reels are portrait sized 1080×1920.
  • Instagram carousel video is 1080 x 1350

In conclusion, most bloggers know the importance of sharing their content on social media and making it easily accessible, but they tend to overlook another opportunity to share and promote their content by just repurposing it.

The best way to get more out of your content is to use it in different ways. It doesn’t have to be a new post, just something different.
